Water Service Line Inspections
To help create a more complete service line inventory, City of Houston contractors will be going door-to-door to check the material of CUSTOMER side water service lines across the City’s six distribution systems.

You do not need to be home at the time of the inspection. The contactor will first knock on the door at each inspection location. If the door is answered, they introduce themselves and ask to check where the pipe enters the customer’s home/building. If there is no answer, the contractor will attempt to locate the pipe on the exterior of your home and perform the inspection.
- Contractors will always carry identification
- They will NOT ask to enter your home
- The inspection will take ten minutes or less
After checking the water service line, the contractor will leave a door hanger with information on your water service line's material. If the line is lead or galvanized steel, you will receive additional information on how to protect yourself and your family from lead in drinking water with home flushing (running water) information.
If you are not home and the contractor is unable to locate or access the water service line, they will leave information on how to check and report your own material.
If you prefer to check your own water service line material, please view our Inventory Map and see if the City has information for your home/building. If the material is listed as unknown, please follow the steps on the web page to self-report your water service line material with photos. Customers are highly encouraged to self-report, although this is not mandatory.
